Eén van de beste songs die U2 ooit gemaakt heeft is “One”, verschenen op de in 1992 uitgebrachte plaat “Achtung Baby”. Niemand weet waar het over gaat, volgens Bono is het eigenlijk redelijk negatief. Toch wordt het veel gebruikt als openingsnummer op huwelijken. En vooral: het wordt veel gecovered. Bijna elke zich zelf respecterende artiest heeft het live al gezongen, van R.E.M. over Robbie Williams tot de Smashing Pumpkins.
Nog niet zo lang geleden maakt Johnny Cash, een goeie vriend van Bono een eigenzinnige maar prachtige cover (zie “American III: Solitary Man”). En 15 jaar na het eerste succes staat U2 weer in de hitparade met het nummer, dit keer in een prachtige versie met Mary J. Blige.
De Britten verkozen de tekst van “One” onlangs tot beste songtekst, en dan meer bepaald het stukje
“One life, with each other, sisters, brothers”
Ondanks het feit dat het een schitterende song is, is het toch niet speciaal als tekst, eerder cryptisch.
